The brighter prospects we identified in our main note last month are already coming out through a plucky trading update covering the 13 weeks ended 2 April. Adjusting for the calendar impacts from having six days less of its winter sale year-on-year, underlying sales grew 5% reflecting strong footfall, improved conversion and higher transaction values. Online sales grew a sparkling 27.6%, while it added one new superstore and conducted several medium sized store refits.Pleasingly, gross margin rose 0.9% largely due to improved stock management and reduced cost of end of season product clearance. 0.3% of the gain came from a one-off benefit of having those six fewer winter sales days.The total store numbers were 152 at the per ...
