Like Speedy, shares in Brandon Hire are also performing well, with its latest forecast beating results only adding to the positive sentiment. For the year ended 31 December, pretax profit increased by 34% to £5.2m, on turnover up 23% at £48.7m, while underlying earnings rose 31% to 12.5p. The combination of a robust tool-hire market, aggressive expansion in branch numbers by 32 to 130 and an improvement in operating margins from 11.3% to 12.5%, drove this growth. Going forward, chief executive, Charles Skinner, notes that Brandon has only just scratched the surface in the North of England, Scotland and East Anglia, while the South East and East Midlands are still well away from maturity. ...
