Shares in Venture Production surged to a new high of 635p following a confident trading update which disclosed that average production for 2005 was 29,864 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), but crucially its average production in December had soared to over 50,000 boepd. Since then, Venture has released production guidance for 2006 of 40,000-42,000 boepd which, in our opinion, is a deliberate lowball figure designed to virtually guarantee that it will beat its own targets.
