Aquarius Platinum (FT sector: Mining), which entered our trader portfolio at 483p in December 2005 and was revisited at 928p last October, has been a cracking investment, with the latest surge to a new high of 1585p being triggered by take-over speculation after a bid approach for AIM-listed rival, African Platinum (Afplats). Of particular interest is the fact that Aflplats’ stalker is top four producer Impala Platinum, which itself holds a substantial stake in Aquarius. The other significant point is that the sky high platinum prices (now above US$1,200 per ounce) are yielding huge surplus cashflows, which is increasing the appetite for consolidation.
