The main story behind the interim results of spread betting firm IG was that although sales beat expectations, the expected positive gearing effect in earnings never materialised because management invested the gains in extra IT and marketing to support future growth. Therefore the inevitable sour grapes from short-term investors knocked the shares down from their high of 302p to 275p. For the six months ended 30 November, turnover and pretax profit rose 44% to nearly £56m and £29.6m respectively. Diluted earnings rose 43% to 6.2p.
