Shares in engineering services firm Charter have rallied after a strong update that noted underlying earnings for 2008 will be slightly ahead of previous expectations. Excellent cash generation and control of working capital meant it ended the year with net cash of over £50m, compared with £36.2m as at 30 June, while it also has committed credit facilities of £145m, maturing between 2011 and 2013.For the first three quarters of last year trading at its larger welding products business, ESAB, had been well ahead of 2007 but the final quarter was weaker reflecting a sharp drop in key end user industries, particularly automotive.
