Greene King, which has been running pubs for over 200 years, can claim with some justification to be one of the top performing companies in its sector and the fact that its earnings have risen from 14.6p to 74.0p in the past 13 years is no small beer. Yet in spite of this staggering five-fold eps growth the company, which owns a high quality freehold estate of nearly 2,600 outlets, has seen its shares pummelled due to wider concerns about the state of the industry amidst the ongoing credit crunch, rising unemployment and weak consumer confidence.
