Carphone Warehouse - Smart phones drive surge in sales

Shares in Carphone Warehouse have rallied almost vertically to 202p following a positive Q3 update. What made the shares catch fire was the 7.8% like-for-like sales increase in its 50/50 joint venture, Best Buy Europe (including 16% in the UK alone), driven by the post pay segment and particularly smart phones and tablets. Overall revenues in Europe increased almost 15% to £1,089m. Elsewhere Virgin Mobile France increased revenues 10% to Eu120m. Carphone's shares may receive anther boost should the founder of its US partner, Best Buy, confirm recent press reports and take his company private as this would trigger a change of control clause allowing Carphone to acquire the other 50% in Best Buy Europe at a 10% discount ...
