Experian, which was spun out of FTSE-100 mail order supremo, GUS, back in 2007, has built up a powerful and virtually unassailable franchise in “credit referencing”, providing credit information to help finance companies make decisions over which businesses and consumers to lend money to. The recent barnstorming run in the shares reflects improving credit conditions in the US (nearly half its business) but also its well-timed expansion into fast-growing Latin American countries, which from a standing start five years ago already comprise 22% of sales and are rapidly growing in importance to the group.
