Peter Hambro’s latest update noted that it will incur higher than expected costs in 2005, which will result in profits coming below expectations. The problems related to higher fuel, energy and plant consumable costs, partly at its main producing mine, Pokrovsky, but mainly affecting its joint venture at Omchak (where it doesn’t have operational control). Although the statement reads like a profit warning and broker Cazenove is cutting its pretax profit forecast from US$31.3m to US$20.3m, there are mitigating circumstances, with half the shortfall relating to a change in its accounting treatment for US$5.3m of expenses.
