One of the greatest success stories in the 1990s was restaurant chain Pizza Express, whose shares soared from a float price of 41p to peak at 978p, on the back of a phenomenal rate of expansion that saw it grow from 23 restaurants to more than 300. While its key financial backers, Luke Johnson and Hugh Osmond, went on to hog the media limelight with a string of high profile deals, the chief architect of its success was in fact its chief executive, David Page, who had originally cut his teeth as Pizza Express’ largest franchisee. So it should be no surprise that his new restaurant vehicle, AIM-listed Clapham House, has seen its shares bid up from its float price of 100p to the current 375p amidst a wave of frenzied buying.
