Meat processor Cranswick released a Q4 update, which noted underlying sales rose 12% in the three months to 31 March. Total sales for the year rose 13% including acquisitions. The group has invested over Â£20m in the year on its infrastructure to improve operational efficiencies and launch new products. New facilities include a new gourmet pastry facility at Malton, N. Yorkshire while work is ongoing to extend its Milton Keynes cooked meats facility. Although operating margins will be slightly lower than last year due to record pig meat prices, these have fallen from record highs of 173p / kg before Christmas to around 163p / kg today, helped by falling prices of wheat and soya, the key cost for pig farmers.
