Mears, which repairs and maintains social housing on behalf of local authorities, is one of those shares you place in the bottom drawer and sit back and wait for the gains to accumulate. Its work may not seem glamorous but it has fashioned a glorious record with eps increasing more than six-fold from 4.8p to 30.1p between 2002-2013. Key to its longevity is the fact that these are non-discretionary services, which its customers are obliged to fund out of income, which is ring fenced from central Government. However, its biggest attraction is the fact that contracts last an average 6-7 years, which provides valuable forward visibility to earnings, while its gargantuan order book of £3.8bn covers 92% of forecast turnover for this year and 7 ...
