During the long boom that preceded the credit crunch the idea of going to a store that sells thousands of items for £1 probably only appealed to a minority of hard pressed shoppers but the subsequent squeeze on living standards has meant that everyone now loves a bargain. Over in the US there is already a big discount sector on the stock market and Dollar General, which has about 11,000 stores and a market value of over US$19bn and Family Dollar (8,000 stores and a US$8bn cap.) are both nibbling away at the market share of Wal Mart and the drug stores.
