Meat processing is traditionally regarded as a risky place to invest on account of intense competition, food price volatility and occasional food scares. Against this backdrop I nevertheless recall my first meeting with Martin Davey, the long-standing chairman and former CEO of meat processor Cranswick, in the august surroundings of the Farmers Club in Westminster a few years ago.
