As the chart below shows, shares in Unite, the leader in the development and letting of affordable, high quality student accommodation, are building up a head of steam following a period in the doldrums. Up until two years ago, Unite had fashioned an impressiverecord with its net asset value (NAV) increasing from 50p in 1998 to 286p in 2002. However, subsequent concerns over its high levels of gearing forced it to slow its rate of expansion and the resulting investor backlash took the shares down to a level where the discount toNAV was 60%. But things are now looking up, with last month's interim results showing a return to profit, while the recent disposal of five accommodation blocks for nearly £50m has seen balance sheet fears recede ...
