Shares in engineering firm Charter have performed very well since wemade them a main buy in May ’06 at 763p and followed up with anotherbuy recommendation at 970p six months ago. The catalyst for the latestsurge was forecast busting interim results, which led to a round ofbroker upgrades.  For the six months ended 30 June, operating profit grew 20.3% to£85.4m, which was 10% ahead of expectations, albeit flattered by £4.5mof one-off gains. Turnover increased nearly 11% to £691m, while epsgrew 26% to nearly 42p. Net cash increased from £36m to £60m. Charter’s largest division, ESAB, which makes welding products andadvanced cutting systems, saw a 26% increase in profit, with marginsincreasing from 12.2% to 13.7%. ...
