Smart Metering Systems (SMS) which has soared from a placing price of 60p in July last year to a recent high of 257p, is one of those companies benefiting from energy regulator, OFGEM's attempts to increase competition and efficiency in the gas industry in its battle to protect the consumer from ever rising prices. Established in 1995 and based in Glasgow SMS was originally involved in the outsourced management of gas connections, a business which has built up nicely thanks to contract wins with a roster of blue-chip gas suppliers such as BP Energy, Total and Shell Gas Direct.
