The positive benefits from Government schemes making it easier to get on the housing ladder have underpinned strong trading from Barratt, with pretax profit increasing 74% to £192m for the six months to 30 June. The company reported a 5% increase in completions to 10,978 while operating margin increased to 10.4% reflecting an increasing contribution from houses built on cheaper land bought after the credit crunch started. Private forward orders spiked 44% year-on-year to £880m while forward sales were up 60% at £1,231m.
