Back in the 1970s, when there were just three “free to air†television channels, commercial TV was a license to print money as long-running shows such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale pulled in huge audiences and fast moving consumer goods companies paid a king's ransom to reach them. Given the emergence of new distractions such as tablets and smart phones, not to mention competition from satellite and cable TV, you might have expected ITV, the commercial public television service for the United Kingdom, to have faded away in recent years but in fact quite the opposite has happened.
