All the supermarket chains have been warning on profits as they lose share to the discounters, a sector which has ballooned from £1.4bn to £5.4bn between 2001-2013. Traditionally, this sector was seen as a dowdy niche but a recent survey showed that nearly nine in ten consumers have bought something from at least one of the seven largest general value discounters while forecasts point to industry growth of 8.2% a year up to 2018.
