With Russia threatening to cut off Ukraine’s gas supplies this winter, energy security has suddenly become a hot topic but in India, the second most populated country on Earth, power blackouts have almost become a way of life as the country’s economic miracle has overwhelmed its creaking infrastructure. The big problem facing India is that in order to keep up with burgeoning demand it needs to find another 500 Gigawatts (that’s 500,000 megawatts) of power capacity over the next 20 years to eradicate its deficit, which works out at 25 GW each year, but even in its best year to date the country’s only ever added 21GW.
