The idea that a petrol station forecourt operator could set the stock market alight might seem far-fetched but Republic of Ireland-based Applegreen has done exactly that, with the shares, which floated at 277p in June 2015, recently hitting a high of 540p. There’s a lot more to it than that, of course and the model is to attract customers into the store with competitive fuel prices in order to up-sell higher margin food and beverages (including coffee, sandwiches and baked goods) as well as a retail offer.
