The loss of Alitalia, Air Berlin and now Monarch Airlines, along with Ryanair’s flight cancellations (the latter due to mistakes with pilot holiday leave and a PR cock-up by the controversial CEO) mean European short-haul capacity growth this winter could be just 3.2% rather than the 7.3% expected a week ago according to HSBC. The corollary of course is that these capacity cuts could improve pricing power and is why shares in Ryanair itself as well as TMI favourite Easyjet are flying high. Another low-cost airline in favour is Wizz Air, which has been on a tear since it listed in March ‘15.
