Shares in ASA International have endured a rough time after listing on the Main Market at 313p in July 2018 but there are signs of a recovery. The group is one of the largest international microfinance institutions (MFI) and provides modest loans on a small scale to female entrepreneurs over the age of 15 in parts of Asia and Africa as a way of getting them out of poverty. ASA’s typical customers are women entrepreneurs who operate from urban or semi-urban areas in industries as diverse as agriculture (growing vegetables), making clothes such as saris (where they might need working capital for garments or to buy a sewing machine) or selling food and drink, where they might invest in a fridge to mark-up a cold can of cola by 50%.
