For the first time in four years S&U, the provider of homecollected credit, saw a slowdown in underlying profit growth in the sixmonths to end July and the shares were marked down to 450p, havingtouched an intra day low of 410p.  Operating profit was flat at£4.8m for two reasons.  Growth in business transacted slowed toless than 1% (£43.1m versus £42.9m) and there was a jump in bad debtprovisions from £2.2m to £2.8m.  Thanks to the profit on the saleof a property and lower interest payments, pretax profit inched ahead6% to £4.5m.  S&U blamed its decision to write less business  on theeconomic slowdown in a bid to avoid exposure to loans of dubiousquality, which could lead to bad debts.  ...
