One of our most successful tips was Albemarle & Bond, owner of the largest chain of pawnbroking shops in the UK, whose shares rocketed from our recommendation price of 39p in June 2001 to an all-time high of 280p last October, yielding a memorable gain-to-high of 618%. For much of that upswing it was the only quoted firm in this sector but eventually it was joined by H&T (FT sector: AIM, Financial General) in May 2006 in a placing on AIM, which allowed the latter's private equity backers to exit. At the time of its float the original forecasts in the market were for H&T to make a pretax profit of £5.4m in 2007 and just over £6m this year.
