The unexpected disclosure of improved trading conditions combined with a sharp reduction in debt were enough to send investors flocking back into Hill & Smith, which soared to a new high of 319p. Indeed, its results for the six months to 30 June were resilient enough with underlying pretax profit up 2% to £20.5m on revenues that fell 7% to £197m. Eps rose 9% to 18p but the big story was the £40m reduction in net debt to £106.1m thanks to strong cash flow. Hill & Smith's main infrastructure products division, which supplies road safety barriers, street lighting columns, variable road messaging signs and temporary car parks, saw an 8% rise in both turnover to almost £100m and underlying profits to £12m, with strong cos ...
