Few shares during the summer lull have enjoyed such an explosive surge as Smart Metering Systems, a business that installs and manages smart meters, which measure the volume of gas and electricity usage to help customers save money and reduce the demand on the UK’s stretched energy supplies. Going back to 2011 the shares have gone from less than £1 to over £7 but there is plenty more to come. The opportunity for SMS comes from energy regulator OFGEM’s attempts to increase competition and efficiency by de-regulating the gas market to protect businesses and consumers from ever increasing prices.
