The excitement in the pubs sector following the recent bids for EI Group and Greene King has frothed up shares in Marstons, which like the others is also backed by a significant and attractive freehold portfolio. Trading wise, it produced respectable figures for the 42 weeks to 20 July with like-for-like managed pubs sales up 0.5%. This included 0.1% in destination & premium and 1.1% in Taverns. That isn’t as bad as it looks as last year’s comparables were boosted by hot weather and the football World Cup. It has remained firm on pricing and avoiding  unnecessary promotions with operating margins in line with expectations.Within its beer division volumes are as expected and continue to outperform the market. ...
