The gold price has just hit a new high of £1,440 / oz, providing a helpful tail-wind for pawnbrokers like H&T, which having been founded in 1897, has long been in the business of lending money to retail customers secured against their rings and other jewellery.The shares floated at 172p in May 2006 and it’s fair to say have oscillated between 130p and 402p buffeted by dramatic moves in the gold price. Back in 2011, when gold hit a new high of £1180 / oz, it attracted many new entrants into the market (e.g gold pop-up stores) but the subsequent downturn in gold and a regulatory crackdown (which imposed a cap on interest rates for short term loans) saw many leave the market.Big players, like the Money Shop ...
