Inchcape is the world's largest independent vehicle distributor and retailer and has witnessed a  remarkable recovery in its fortunes  since the arrival in 1999 of Chief Executive, Peter Johnson.  It is not surprising that its shares are currently enjoying a strong run, as the UK, where it generates its highest element of sales, experienced growth in  new car sales of 13% in July, smashing all  previous records.  The car  industryis now forecasting annual sales to hit 2.5m units, which would also be a record.     Johnson was in ebullient form whenwe met him over the month, particularly as Inchcape had posted a 32%rise in underlying pretax profit last year.
