With a proud record of growing pretax profit in each of its last 18 years, East Yorkshire-based Cranswick has become a by-word for consistency that few others can match. Such longevity is particularly rare in the smaller company arena and Cranswick only managed it by ruthlessly throwing out its volatile pig trading business and replacing it with a higher quality business supplying premium pork products to supermarkets. This process has taken a long time but the sale of its pig herd last year was almost the last piece of the jigsaw, leaving its premium foods business accounting for 93% sales and 98% profit.
