During the last boom the price of copper gained more than 400% and really captured the public's imagination with suggestions in the press that it would be worthwhile melting down 2p coins in  order to sell the copper content. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond Uncle Sam was so rattled that at one point it considered banning the export of scrap metals for the first time since the 1970s. And the crazy thing is that on the second anniversary of the start of the Credit Crunch another boom in copper is already in full swing with the price having more than doubled since the start of the year, albeit still 30% down on the previous peak.
