Heavyweight stockbroker Goldman Sachs, which was the first to predict that oil would spike beyond US$100 a barrel, now believes that while the financial crisis has been addressed, the commodity crisis has not. While some may regard this as gratuitous scaremongering, the broker stresses that the commodity problem is one of supply shortage due to years of underinvestment. When combined with the significant increase in demand led by the resurgent Chinese economy, it doesn't take much imagination to understand why the oil price has suddenly doubled from less than US$35 to US$75 a barrel and could easily hit US$100 again, driven as much by the weight of speculative money as by fundamentals.
