Alongside JD Sports, Sports Direct is the only other quoted sports shop retailer performing creditably well, with results for the 12 months to 26 April showing turnover rising 8.6% to £1,367m while underling EBITDA fell just 9% to £136.8m. The big spoiler was that the firm's policy of taking stakes in rival sportswear firms backfired, with its holding in Finland's Amer Sports now effectively frozen because it was partly financed by Icelandic Bank Kaupthing, which went into administration last October. As a result it was forced to take a £53m write-down, which along with negative adjustments for currency exchange movements meant reported profits before tax fell 91% to £10.7m.
