Abcam - Shares soar after strong trading triggers broker upgrades

Since our main write-up four issues ago on Abcam, the online antibody retailer, the shares have gained over £3, largely thanks to a very positive trading update on 15 July. This noted that thanks to the weakness of sterling and strong cost control, pretax profit for the current year will be 9% ahead of market consensus expectations. Abcam's online catalogue has continued to grow and now comprises 63,000 products, mostly antibodies. It also reiterated previous comments that whilst its protein detection and regulation markets are exciting, it is still unclear whether the recession will affect demand from Governments and companies around the world.
