It might have been hoped that the “light grilling” endured by founder and executive deputy chairman Mike Ashley would draw a line under the negative press coverage attached to working practices at Sports Direct’s Shirebrook campus. But his revelation that some employees were paid below the national minimum wage (often because of standing in long queues waiting to be searched by security) as well as Brexit uncertainties have worsened the share price malaise.
