The shares soared 16p in one day after Premier Oil announced a major discovery in Mexico, with its Zama-1 well finding “a contiguous gross oil bearing interval of over 335m (1,100 ft.) with up to 200m (650 ft.) of net oil bearing interval in the Upper Miocene sandstones.” It’s also in shallow water of c. 200 metres (making it easier to extract) and is light oil (cheaper to refine).According to Jefferies, initial estimates are for greater than 1 billion barrels of oil in place with the discovery likely to extend into neighbouring acreage with total size of structure being 2 billion barrels.
